The Viner
Vineyard was established in 1932 by William Scrope Viner.
Mr. Viner was an English horticulturist who, after an extensive
search for the best setting to grow grapes and apples, settled
on Saluda, North Carolina.
Saluda
had many advantages - a mild southern climate, fertile soils,
and plentiful rainfall. Mr. Viner established his orchard
and vineyard and was quickly growing top quality produce.
Saluda had one more asset Mr. Viner needed - the railroad.
In the 1930's, the railroad provided access to the growing
population centers that needed the fruit he was producing
so abundantly.
Mr. Viner's
work was not confined to just growing fruit. Out of necessity,
he also began to make wooden baskets and boxes that were needed
to ship his harvest to big cities up and down the East Coast.
Seventy-three years later, some of Mr. Viner's box-making
equipment is still used though most of his tools have long
ago become valued antiques. But Mr. Viner's vision still inspires
us - we make hard-working furniture and wooden accessories.
